“Digital Storytelling for the Environment” Grant Awarded
The Digital Scholarship team at St. Lawrence University is excited to announce it has been awarded a $12K grant from the Northern New York Library Network (NNLYN).
The “Digital Storytelling for Environmental & Climate Action” initiative, proposed by Eric Williams-Bergen and Nicole Roche, will leverage digital storytelling tools and techniques to help students and faculty construct powerful environmental narratives with real-world impacts. The grant supports the purchase of professional production equipment intended for outdoor use, such as light-shaping tools, field-recording microphones, and macro lenses, as well as the creation of new training workshops and related web resources on the fundamentals of environmental storytelling.
The “Digital Storytelling for Environmental & Climate Action” initiative is intended to guide SLU storytellers as they create digital content in and for the environment, especially when it comes to the following techniques and considerations:
- Documentary interviews, especially camera techniques, lighting, and audio;
- Photography and film/video of the local natural environment;
- Field audio recordings of the local natural environment;
- Editing of video, photography, and audio;
- The role of generative AI in content creation; and
- Media management and digital rights management.
St. Lawrence University’s Center for the Environment and Nature Up North are excited to partner with the DS team on this initiative. The DS team is also in conversation with faculty developing classes and projects in conservation biology, global environmental history, and more. An upcoming fall workshop will be one opportunity for faculty to share pedagogical strategies for engaging students with new technologies and the natural world.
