Library Mapping Project

This summer, members of the Digital Scholarship team are working to complete a library mapping project intended to help visitors navigate Owen D. Young Library. The finished map will allow visitors to explore all three levels of the library and to locate common destinations such as the Tree Room, the WORD Studio, the Digital Café, or the Frost-Ferguson Room.

The team, which includes John LaShomb, Nicole Roche, and Eric Williams-Bergen, is using the plugin Mapplic and a custom Drupal module to construct the interactive map. The map will allow users to search a list of locations or click on sections on the map to learn about that location. Popups and links will provide additional information and zoom controls aid the user’s experience. As the project progresses, the team is also interested in adding features such as route-finding, hyperlapse, 360 images, and YouTube embeds.

Given the size of ODY library and its many destinations, the Digital Scholarship team has had its eye on a library mapping project for some time now. By helping to improve accessibility for all library users, the finished project is also expected to be a valuable contribution to the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Strategic Plan that is currently underway at St. Lawrence University. In addition, the team is interested to see how the library mapping project might offer insight into future mapping projects that could be implemented across campus.
