Digital Collections at St. Lawrence University

The St. Lawrence University Libraries have been working with Innovative Interfaces Inc. (III) on a project to “harvest” the metadata associated with records from the University’s digital collections.  Records from the Liberal Arts Scholarly Repository project (LASR) and the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery’s ContentDM collections form the basis for the initial harvests.  You can try this functionality out by running a search for “Fox News” in Encore.

St. Lawrence University has joined the Liberal Arts Scholarly Repository (LASR), a digital archive designed to feature the scholarship of students at Liberal Arts institutions.

Excerpt of draft from the mission statement: Scholarship is a conversation that depends on the work of others. Vital to this exchange of ideas is the accessibility of research, criticism, and other scholarly and creative work to the larger community of scholars. The Liberal Arts Scholarly Repository is an openly accessible archive that documents the scholarly and other creative activity of the students, faculty, and staff of the participating institutions. It provides individual scholars at those institutions (and beyond) the opportunity to share, explore, discover, and evolve the ideas, experience, enquiry fundamental to liberal education.

The St. Lawrence University Environmental Archive will serve as a digital repository for scholarly works created by students, faculty and alumni. This body of work will be made available as a part of the Liberal Arts Scholarly Repository (LASR), an initiative for which St. Lawrence University is a participant.

We are currently in the process of digitizing and cataloging work by students and faculty from the period 1990-2008 and anticipate the collection of new materials as they become available during the 2008-2009 academic year. We have just upgraded our ContentDM instance to version 4.2 and added JPEG2000 functionality. Image collections built with this functionality will allow users to zoom and pan into and around images. We anticipate an upgrade to version 4.3 in January.

The following study, “Using Digital Images in Teaching and Learning,” was commissioned by Wesleyan University in collaboration with the National Institute for Technology and Liberal Education (NITLE).

The study focuses on the pedagogical implications of the widespread use of the digital format. However, while changes in the teaching-learning dynamic and the teacher-student relationship were at the core of the study, related issues concerning supply, support and infrastructure rapidly became part of its fabric. These topics include the quality of image resources, image functionality, management, deployment and the skills required for optimum use (digital and image “literacies”).

This report is rooted in faculty experience in “going digital,” as shown in four hundred survey responses and three hundred individual interviews with faculty and some staff at 33 colleges and universities: 31 liberal arts colleges together with Harvard and Yale Universities. Two-thirds of the survey respondents worked in the arts and humanities, 27% in the sciences and 12% in the social sciences. These faculty were self-selected and mostly convinced of the digital promise of abundant, fluid resources. They wanted to communicate both their enthusiasm for their endeavor and their frustration at the pace and quality of their transition to teaching with this new format.

Cathy Tedford, Director of the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery, and Eric Williams-Bergen, Science Librarian, have been asked to lead an effort to develop a vision and a plan for digital asset management at St. Lawrence and to produce a report on their findings by the end of the academic year.

St. Lawrence University is currently developing a strategic plan for the management of our digital collections.

A working group of faculty and staff have been convened to discuss our current management practices and to discuss the future of digital asset management at St. Lawrence.
